Gazebo Placement

Choosing a Site for Your Gazebo
A gazebo that has been placed in a yard without any real reason can be a sad sight.

Start by thinking about how you will use the gazebo. Is it a place for entertaining? Dining? That might require a larger gazebo than you first might have thought. Make sure you plan for at least 46 inches between the edges of the table and the railings, so people can walk behind the chairs. That means at least a 12-foot wide gazebo for a typical table that seats four.

The view of your gazebo can be as important as the view from your gazebo. Do you want the gazebo to be a focal point? Perhaps a juncture of two or more garden paths? Make sure you think about how your gazebo will impact the rest of your garden.

If you want to block an obtrusive view without stifling breezes or cutting too much light, install lattice on several sides of the gazebo.

Draw a Site Plan
If you’re lucky, you’ll have the opportunity to build your gazebo as part of an overall landscape plan. But even if you are fitting your gazebo into an existing landscape, drawing at least a rough site plan usually is the best way to plan how your gazebo will work with the rest of your yard.

Sun Patterns
There are several reasons to consider the seasonal and daily pattern of the sun when sitting your gazebo. If you want the gazebo to be a shady retreat it should be oriented to the east of tall trees so you can enjoy their shade. If you’re not building near trees you might want to put the entrance facing away from the sun. This way, the sun will be at your back in stead of in your face when you sit in the gazebo.

Remember your gazebo will cast shadows. You don’t want to build a gazebo only to discover your bed of sun-loving plants is now robbed of summer sunlight.

Reflection on the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver

February 28th, 2010

Winter Olympics in Vancouver are coming to a close this weekend. Canada has done a superb job hosting the games and in general the games have been a success with scores of memorable events.

Vancouver Olympic stadium, the indoor arena where the Opening Ceremony took place, and all the Olympic venues, from immaculately prepared speed skating track, short track, ski jumping, freestyle skiing and snowboard events to cross-country, Nordic combined and alpine skiing events have been all magnificently prepared and run even though the weather has not been always too cooperative.

The only dark shadow hanging over the games has been the luge death of an Olympic athlete on the Whistler Mountain track. While the heat of the competition is still going on and all the luge, skeleton and bobsleigh events have completed without further mishap, track design and safety guidelines for the future remain to be set forth.

Yet to be decided, the men’s Olympic hockey tournament, Canada’s supreme Olympic sport, has shown that the gap between the best professional hockey players in the NHL and those that play in European or Russian leagues is not as wide in terms of skill although it is in wages.

The older players, on brink of retirement from the NHL and at twilight of their careers, showed plenty of skill and stamina and proving they can still compete against the young hockey stars. Unfortunately players like Peter Forsberg and Teemu Selene will not return. And neither will Jaromir Jagr, who at 38 too played his last game at the Olympics.

It was great to see the lower ranked teams like Norway, that showed remarkable results, had players on the roster that are in fact holding onto regular jobs. They played with a true heart.

The NHL players, however, for the most part, including hockey stars the likes of Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby, have so far delivered rather lukewarm performance and their bench looked rather subdued, a far cry from enthusiasm of NHL playoff games, as if they have been saving themselves for the reminder of the NHL season.

Today the Olympic Games continue with ladies slalom, short track relay finals, the US takes on Finland and Canada faces off against Slovakia in the Olympic hockey semifinals.

The Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010 Closing Ceremony is scheduled for February 28. And suddenly, London, the host of the Summer Olympic Games 2012, looms convincingly ahead.

It Gets Harder Before It Gets Simpler

February 27th, 2010

Carla and I are going super hard to work things better in each of our lives. When my 3rd marriage ended, (and let’s just say it “ended,” mmm’kay?) I just knew it was time to realize a change. Not just any shift, I am talking a serious change, girlfriend.

But it only seems everyone wants to hold me out. Life is so difficult, isn’t it? When I visited my doctor to discuss the tummy tuck price I was quoted, he only lectured me about getting the right form of exercise. He recognizes I have been doing everything I can, plastering on the scar zone cream and making all my beauty salon equipment to earn their cost.

But he just continues lecturing me about diet and exercise, telling me my body will improve over the long term if I treat it as if I care for it it.

He’s strong on biking, but I told him cycle seats bother me and I just can’t fathom putting on those tight cycling shirts. Is he trying to abase me? At least he became a little more moderate when he started talking about things I could do in the comfort of my own home.

Exercise bikes may surely function easier for me than riding out in the open and weight benches and exercise mat are a little more my speed.

Yet I likewise feel that I obtain enough fitness in my daily life. Just last calendar week I got tons of exercise tugging around Carla’s garden cart while we adorned her yard for her sister’s birthday party. Rearranging the outdoor bench layout for outdoor party seats after moving the Weber Charcoal Grill made for some good weight lifting. And then the stretching and effort necessary to get all those position proper was like aerobics.

Maybe it sounds like I am making excuses. I don’t care, friend, that was hard work! After all that decorating and partying I bet I burned 1000 calories. I dare some treadmill joggin’ sap to push garden carts around for 5 hours and see how they feel.

I do not mean to sound querulous. I will get it all together. I only wish people would occasionally focus on what I have finished instead of what I still must complete. I do understand it is not simple being you, but it is not easy being me, either. We all have to work hard to be prosperous, I guess.

Do You Work On Your Own Truck?

February 27th, 2010

Since I was a teenager, I’ve always been a backyard mechanic. Going back a few years ago it could be a challenge working on your own car or truck. Although in most cases older cars were easier to work on, it was always a problem obtaining technical information. It was always a challenge finding the correct part, auto performance part or car or truck accessory. The growth of the internet has changed all this. Now you only have to fire up your PC and search the web and you’ll find all the technical information you need right at your fingertips.

The greatest advancement I’ve found for home mechanics is the availability of truck parts and accessories on the web. No more going to a local auto parts store, waiting in long lines to purchase a car or truck part that isn’t available. Today, you can easily find OEM replacement parts at discount prices right on the internet. The biggest benefit is that you’ll find in most cases you can have your replacment parts delivered to your door and still save money over traveling to your local store. Depending upon the size town you live in, you might have a couple auto parts stores available and the larger chain stores do offer competitive pricing. But have you ever found yourself waiting in a long line waiting for counter service only to learn the specific part you need isn’t in stock?

All of that is a thing of the past. Today the web makes home auto repairs easier then ever before. You can find technical information and practical answers to your questions in forums written by guys with hands-on experience. So comparison shopping for a specific part or auto performance part is a breeze. Plus you’ll find most of the web stores show you how long you will have to wait for shipping. The biggest benefit is the huge variety of pickup truck accessories you’ll find online.

Recently I was shopping for some Dodge truck accessories online. In less then two days I had my performance kit on my doorstep. I actually had the parts delivered and I still saved over $50 by shopping online. The thing I enjoyed most is not standing in line at the local auto parts store. Therefore I recommend the next time you consider doing some work on your own pickup truck, start your project off by searching the web for great deals on parts and accessories.
