Brewing the Perfect Espresso

October 31st, 2009
Comments Off

There are several ways to brew coffee and each method creates a different taste. The high-pressure brewing method extracts the maximum flavor and aroma from coffee grounds. Many fine restaurants and hotels the world over only serve freshly brewed coffee extracted under high pressure. A capresso espresso machine does exactly that.

Brewing coffee as quickly as possible and under high pressure is the ideal process to extract maximum flavor and aroma from your coffee while also preventing the extraction of bitter oils.

When you use this technique to brew one or two ounces of coffee at a time it is considered an espresso. When the grinding, the tamping and the pressure all come together in the right combination your espresso will always produce a foamy layer on top, called the “crema”. Crema doesn’t just look nice. It traps the fine aromatics and the light gaseous flavors of coffee beans that register on the palate. It keeps the flavors, which would other wise escape, locked in. The crema is the hallmark of a well prepared espresso.

High pressure pumps are the key to good espresso. The pump forces the water through resistance provided by the packed grounds. The amount of pressure it needs to do so is commonly measured in bar. Good espresso pumps should be able to create more pressure than they need to produce perfect espresso. A good pump has a capacity of creating 15 or more bars. Water should pass through the coffee at approximately 7 to 9 bar of pressure. If the pressure is too low the crema will disappear and the coffee will taste thin and watery. If the pressure is too high the coffee will taste bitter and the espresso will have no crema on top.

Dont be Afraid of Skinny Jeans

October 31st, 2009
Comments Off

When I found out a few years ago there was something called “skinny jeans” and that with girls clothing they were coming into style, I must admit, I didn’t like the idea. I’m a curvy girl and only 5 feet, 2 inches tall, unlike Katelyn Rose who is tall. So, imagining a pair of tight jeans that showed every curve on my legs seemed like a bad idea.  Maybe even a nightmare! But if you’re like me, and have the same reservations about skinny jeans, I’m here to bring you hope.

Most girls don’t realize that you can wear skinny jeans in so many ways. If you are tall and slender, you may have more options than the rest of us, but girls of all shapes and sizes can pull off the skinny jean look. The thing to do is try out different combinations. You don’t know if you look good in a certain style until you try it, right? The key is finding a pair you feel comfortable and confident in. Try one of the following ideas.

1. Wear a long shirt that comes to about mid-thigh with your skinny jeans. This will help cover the hip area if that is a place you’re concerned about showing. This way, the most slender part of your leg will be showing only.

2. Put on a vest or cardigan that is longer than the shirt or tank you are wearing, to go with your skinny jeans. This will have the same effect as a long shirt, but gives you the ability to layer.

3. If you are shorter, make sure your skinny jeans don’t bunch at your ankle too much, as this will make you appear even shorter.

Those are just a few tips you can try out, but they might not work for everyone. The most important thing is that you feel good about how you look.

So now that I’ve overcome my fear of skinnies, I’ve fallen in love with them! Most recently I bought a pair of black skinny corduroys from Urban Outfitters for under $40. I love them in black because they flatter my figure and if I want, I can easily make them look dressy for a nice event, with the right top of course. And don’t forget how awesome these wonderful pants look with boots! The perfect look for a chilly fall day!

Thailand is one of the top holidaying area in the world. You can laze on amazing beaches, hike perilous cliffs, dive amazing coral reefs, visit classic historical sites, explore great caves, and hang out in energetic and fast paced cities. However, most tourists come to Thailand for the beaches and, these tropical islands are the best reason to come to Thailand – Thailand has numerous tropical islands to choose from! Most tourists stick to a few exceptional Thai islands and with good reason. They wouldn’t be popular if they weren’t good. Here are some tips for your next Thailand travel!

Ko Lipe is a tiny island located in the southern Thai area of Satun and is located in the Andaman Sea. The island is situated in the Tarutao National Marine Park and although it is gradually becoming more popular, it is still a relatively relaxing place for now. Visitors can try out scuba diving right off the island, white sandy beaches, inexpensive cuisine and friendly, active locals. Avoid the holiday season when the crowds peak.

Surin National Park is found some 60 km off the west coast of Phang Nga province. The excellent snorkeling, trekking and game fishing are what most tourists come for, and those hoping to find a quiet refuge from the travelers traps will be delighted with the lack of “development.” Surin Nuea is also home to a community of around 150 Moken, or “sea gypsies”, who have settled there on a semi-permanent basis for several decades. The islands are protected and can only be visited by organized tours, which helps keep the diving good and the crowds thin.

Traveling to Phuket, it is one of the most beautiful and attractive tourist spots in Thailand. Known as Tha-Laang or Talang or even Junk Ceylon, it is nestled on the south of Thailand with the cities of Phang Nga and Krabi neighboring it.

Because of its rich natural resources and attraction points, Phuket is gaining more and more name and fame in all over the world The major destinations of the city include Wat Chalong Temple, Khao Praew Thaew National park, Thai Boxing, The big Buddha statue, and the mesmerizing beach. The Gibbon Rehebilitation Centre Phuket is also one of the major attractions for the visitors and they can see here the apes enjoying their lives.

If you have an opportunity, you have to enjoy a Bangkok holiday. Bangkok is considered to be one of the world’s top tourist hotspots. Normally walking is better than taking a taxi or renting your own vehicle. You can also take the MRT metro (underground railway) to get around Bangkok.

Bangkok is an excellent destination to shop and is often called “the shopper’s stop.” Bangkok also has a variety of shopping experiences from street markets to malls. The Chatuchak weekend market is famed as the largest shopping areas in Bangkok. You can also find water markets in the travelers areas. If you have a chance to visit Bangkok, you are sure to come back for more!

Have a Green Australian December Holiday

October 30th, 2009

A mountain of holiday gifts and goods make their way out of stores and into homes each holiday season. It is a harsh reality but, not long after the festivities subside, many of those well-intentioned gifts move speedily on to mounds of landfill.

Slowing the migration is as easy as setting your family the Green holiday Challenge to send as little as possible to landfill this holiday. Inspired by the target of a more or less empty wheelie bin, you will all make decisions that generate less waste.

Many actions contribute to celebrating a green holiday, like selecting locally-grown foods to reduce food miles, switching to LED eco holiday lights and donating gifts to charities. The massive amount of food, plastic and non-recyclable waste is the primary environmental problem, but it is a simple one for eco friendly households to take on.

Sit the team down before holiday and discuss methods of reuse, reduce and recycle. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Eco friendly plastic-free picnics

Disposable plastic plates and cups are created from petrochemicals, so pollution is in their manufacture and when thrown-away they sit in landfill forever. Opt reusable plates that you wash up or use palm leaf plates, a stylish plant alternative. They add a chic eco friendly style to your festive table and can be put onto your garden as mulch, rather than in the bin.

Trim a living tree
When Santa arrives in his carbon-neutral sleigh, surprise him with a live Australian Wollemi pine tree. This recently discovered prehistoric tree is now for sale in nurseries. A potted Wollemi can grow with your family to be trimmed year after year. Or, why not a tradition to find a lovely Eucalyptus branch that can be composted when the holiday festivities are over.

Wrap it again

A good stretch the budget and save piles of waste is to wrap presents in newspaper, magazines and even junk mail. For children use the comics, for car lovers use the motoring pages. wrapping, place gifts inside reusable shopping bags, or sew cloth bags from festive holiday material that your family can re-tie with ribbon every year. For an additional special Green holiday touch, Earth Greetings make gorgeous post consumer waste wrapping paper with Australian holiday designs printed with vegetable inks.

Detour past the bin

, is this holiday gift prone to finish up in the bin within a couple of weeks? If yes, opt for something else. The old saying quality not quantity is a good friend of the planet. Even the cheapest items use the planet’s limited resources, energy and water to manufacture. Instead of buy a risky gift, regard a gift voucher or make a donation to a charity on behalf of the individual. Should you receive an unsuitable gift, pass it straight on to a charity such as the Salvos.

A green holiday gift for your garden

Food scraps make up a large portion of rubbish and once in landfill they generate methane, a concentrated greenhouse gas. Compost at home instead and turn leftovers into fertiliser for your garden. The Bokashi composting bin is a popular system that sits conveniently in your kitchen.

Packaging-free paradise

Picture a paradise where holiday morning is free from mounds of discarded plastic packaging. It just takes a little bit more thought and effort. Locally made and hand-made holiday gifts are to be over-packaged. A trip to the local Farmer’s Markets assist you stock up on fresh festive food with minimal packaging.

As opposed to talking rubbish; this holiday, your family will soon be asking is this for landfill, recycling or composting? And the joy of achieving your challenge will bring good tidings to all.

The Australian Building Business During WWII

October 30th, 2009
Comments Off

After the declaration of war in September 1939 house construction went through a period of decreasing activity. But it did not drop to its minimal level until February 1942 when National Security Regulations posed severe restrictions.

Private building ceased in many areas and was limited in others. However, under the War Housing Program, state and commonwealth authorities did continue with essential housing, such as that needed for munitions workers and their families.

Clear indication of the degree of change is seen in the official statistics. More than 40000 new homes were built throughout Australia in the financial year 1938-39, but in 1942-1943 there were fewer than 4000.”

In the editorial of the Australian Home Beautiful for January 1942, we read of conditions up to that time. Building restrictions, at the moment of writing, limit expenditure on new domestic buildings to 3000 pound and on renovations to 250 pound; but conditions grow harder week by week. In spite of this, a great deal of new and interesting building is being carried on over a widespread area and this will continue as long as materials are available.

War in Europe and North Africa was distant enough for Australia to seem relatively secure. With the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, and their inexorable advance in our direction, any remaining complacency evaporated.

A. V. Jennings, the well-known construction company founded in 1932, continued building houses on its construction within 25 miles (40 km) of the Melbourne GPO as well as restrictions on the transfer of land brought development of the estate to a halt.

As early as May 1941 wartime conditions had begun to cause shortages of building materials and dwindling sales. In that month A.V. Jennings advertised seventeen villa sites and seven business sites, all lots to include, electricity, gas, sewerage, roads, paths and crossings.”

Of the 121 residential blocks, fifty-nine houses had been completed by the beginning of 1942. They were typical of the well-built, double-brick houses constructed by Jennings over the previous decade. Beauview Estate was in a very attractive elevated area with panoramic views and a mere six-and-a-half miles (10.50 km) from the city.

In 1942, with home building now at a standstill, A.V. Jennings averted complete disaster with the sale of all unsold blocks on the estate to the large Melbourne estate agency T.M. Burke. As a company Jennings actually gathered strength through the challenges offered by wartime government construction contracts, so that when it returned to housing on a large scale in the mid-1950s it was able to regain and extend its early reputation in the domestic field.

Brick houses of the type built by A.V Jennings between 1932 and 1942 were basically conservative in their design when compared with the few examples of International Modern built at the same time. Some of the forms or details suggested the continuing popularity of `Spanish Mission” or `Old English”, but generally, there was a tendency toward a common sense functionalism with easily maintained surfaces, modern kitchens, hot-water services reticulated to five or six points, internal toilets and many other features taken for granted by generations.
