Antique Fireplace Mantels

June 30th, 2009
Comments Off

A fireplace is not complete without a mantel. A fireplace mantel or mantelpiece is also called a chimney piece. It has been in existence since the medieval times when people loved to have decorative mantelpieces so that the focus of the room would be on them. A mantel started as a hood over a grate to catch the smoke. But now fireplace mantels are used more for decorative purposes and for looking beautiful.

Even today in rural areas and farms the traditional and the antique mantel pieces still exist. Some people love antique things and would go to great lengths to buy antique pieces. Farms and huge houses in the villages have these antique fireplaces which have an old world charm of their own. In some places the antique fireplace on a farm was used mainly as a cooking area where even a bread oven was sometimes incorporated. Those were the days of large houses and large families. One can imagine hordes of children and adults around a fireplace outdoor where cooking is also done and where the food is kept on shelves around an antique fireplace mantel. Those days are gone and now the mantel pieces have shrunk in size and added on the beauty. In cities the antique fireplace is smaller and fancier and is used solely for heating purposes.

For many centuries in the olden times, the mantelpiece was the most ornamental and artistic piece of the room. Great trouble was taken to design them specifically, sometimes with specific designs suggested by the head of the family. But as the fireplaces shrunk down the ages and other methods of heating introduced, the artistic as well as the practical significance of the fireplace mantel lessened. But now again it is back in preference and many people would love to go in for antique fireplace mantels.

The more intricate and creative they are more is their value. Some people specially order and get made antique fireplace mantels. Some research and go in search of the really ancient and antique ones which may be available in old houses and old families who may be reluctant to part with them. Ancient and antique mantelpieces may be available with antique dealers who may even have auctions for them. Loves of antique things will love to buy these for their own houses. Even a house with a modern decor will look better with an antique fireplace mantel. These mantels have great appeal and are interesting.

Is Your Horse Looking Forward to Winter?

June 29th, 2009
Comments Off

Some horse owners make the mistake of thinking horses should be kept in during the winter months. But in truth, horses do best if they have the freedom of the outdoors. Horses are equipped with the ability to withstand colder temperatures and are even content at 15F. Given the opportunity they will grow thicker coats.

Your horse will appreciate the outdoor freedom to stretch his legs and breathe the fresh air in comparison to being bored in his stall. Exercise will cut down on weight gain from inactivity.

A winter turnout does require extra steps for the safety and enjoyment of your horse but you will see that it will be worth the effort.

A shelter is important on cold windy days. Something like a large bus shelter – a roof with 3 sides is the best because it covers every angle the wind can come in except the front.
Make sure that water is always available. When the temperatures dip down ice can form on the water troughs. If this is an ongoing problem where you live then an investment in a water heater or an automatic pasture waterer will do the trick. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how much they drink, since although they require water, their thirst drops off in the winter.

It’s essential to remember that horses will require more food during the winter months. This is because it requires more energy to stay warm. Increase the amount of hay. Since it takes longer to break down, hay endures longer which in turn provides more long term heat.

Supplements are also a high priority in the cold season. A very effective supplement is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials. It supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity as well as promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. The cold winter air tends to dry out hair and skin but the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials combats this. If you have a horse with joint problems there is a sister product called TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials FlexTM that has had great results.

Fly masks are handy on really windy days especially if your horse has ever had problems with his eyes. Here is a tip for beautiful sunny days when the light is reflecting that it is almost blinding. Use the fly masks. It cuts the glare.

Taking steps for a safe winter turnout will result in a happier and healthier horse – which is what is most important isn’t it?

Choose Pink Satin Bedspreads to Boost Your Room

June 27th, 2009
Comments Off

Bedspreads are ordinarily defined as a decorative bed covering. They are larger than a comforter and hang low enough to cover the box spring. But aside from making your bed look artistically pleasing, pink beadspreads are wonderfully comfortable and can also be used as a blanket.

When you enter a home interior design boutique or visit a similar website online, you’ll be dumbfounded at the numerous designs, colors and dimensions of bedspreads. The several choices are a designer’s paradise but can be a nightmare for Do it Yourself first time decorators. To narrow down your options, reflect on a detailed idea that you would fancy in your bedroom. If you want to something smooth and luxurious, choose a silk, satin or microsuede sheets in red, black or white. Going for a homey, laid back feel? Pick out a padded or quilted bedspread in plain or floral patterns. If you want your bedroom to have that fun vibe then choose vivid, funky colors in symmetrical, striped or circular patterns. To further maximize the beauty of your new bedspread, it is advised that you buy similar and coordinating comforters, bedskirts and pillow cases too.

In selecting the appropriate bedspread for your bedroom, it is also important to take into account the durability of the material. You wouldn’t want to change your sheets frequently as this could get expensive and tiring. If you have pets or children, choose a fabric that’s easy to clean and preferably machine washable. Avoid fabric types that you may be allergic to.

Make sure that you pick out the precise bedspread size for your bed. Buying the incorrect size can leave your mattress exposed or make it drape extremely low. Also, check your budget. It is easier to narrow down choices when you have a specific amount in mind.
